The impact of the security situation in mid-November on household food security - Haiti: Metropolitan Area of Port-au-Prince (Nov. 2024 )

Key Points

The food situation of households in the capital has worsened, with the proportion of households with poor food consumption rising from 28% to 33%, an increase of 5 percentage points in the two weeks following the security events of mid-November. The worst affected communes remain Pétion-Ville, Delmas and Port-au-Prince.

  • An increase of 7 points in the proportion of households experiencing moderate or severe hunger - on the Household Hunger Scale (HHS) - to 84%.
  • 61% of households eat only one meal a day or go without eating for a whole day. This proportion rose to 82% among IPDs.

A further deterioration in the food situation of IDPs facing multiple deprivations in the sites.

The cost of a food basket has risen by 6% across the capital, reaching 27842 HTG for a family of 5, with the highest increases in the communes of Tabarre, Pétion-ville and Delmas, at 18%, 8% and 6% respectively.

  • Households are turning to the black market for fuel products (petrol, diesel and kerosene), with increases of around 20-28%.
