On 17 October, a national day commemorating the assassination of General Dessalines the father of the nation, criminal gangs launched a series of coordinated attacks in several neighborhood of Port-au-Prince disrupting official celebrations, burning houses and a church and looting shops and homes.
Attacks on civilians and destructions continue since 18 October in Solino, a neighborhood north-west of the capital, killing at least one woman and forcibly displacing an unspecified number of people.
Criminal gangs reportedly control 80% of Port-au-Prince and are expanding to regions. The Multinational Security Support Mission has seen its mandate renewed for a year but it remains critically underequipped, understaffed and underfunded.
