Seasonal rainfall delayed over some parts of Haiti

Key Messages

  • An irregular start of the season has been observed across Haiti since middle of March. The season started 1-2 weeks late in parts of Grand-Anse, Sud, Sud-Est Ouest Departments. In Nord-Est Department, the season is up to 4 weeks late, and the season has not yet started at all in much of Artibonite (Figure 1). In some areas, this delay in rainfall has also delayed planting activities. However, the season has begun 2-3 weeks early in parts of Nord-Ouest, Ouest, and Sud-Est Departments

  • Over the past several weeks, rainfall has been slightly below normal across much of Haiti, with most deficits under 25 mm. The largest deficits (25-49 mm) are in Nord-Est and Grand-Anse Departments (Figure 2). Rainfall has been above average in parts of localized parts of Sud and Nord Departments. Near Port-au-Prince, flooding was reported in early to mid-March, associated with above-average rainfall (Figure 3).

  • The forecast for the next two weeks indicates that rainfall will continue to be below average over much of Haiti, with maximum rainfall reaching 30 mm.
