Highlights

The humanitarian crisis in Haiti is marked by a rapid escalation of gang violence, which has compounded the suffering of people already affected by critical levels of food insecurity, poverty and a breakdown in essential services. Whilst tens of thousands are being displaced from their homes, others remain trapped inside gang-controlled neighborhoods, facing very serious protection concerns.

Situation Overview

The UN Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan estimates that 5.5 million Haitians need humanitarian assistance in 2024, including 1.6 million with protection needs.

Gang violence has become increasingly pervasive in Port-au-Prince, where gangs now control 80% of the metropolitan area, among other parts of the country. Generalized violence driven by armed gangs compromises people’s access to safety, food, education and sanitation, and is the main driving force for internal displacement and flows outside Haiti. As of December 2023, over 300,000 individuals were internally displaced in the West, South, South-East, Grande Anse, Center, Nippes and Artibonite Departments due to armed violence.
