DanChurchAid and its local partners in ACT international (ACT) have already begun the relief work in Haiti.
So far we have granted one million crowns and have initiated fund raising activity
The earthquake in Haiti, which measured 7.0 on the Richter scale, has caused massive damages everywhere on the island.
The building that houses DanChurchAid's local partners has collapsed, but three employees have been rescued from the building and the relief work has begun immediately.
"The catastrophe is severe, and we know from experience that fast help is double help.
We are working on immediately sending a disaster management expert with exhaustive knowledge of Haiti to the area, where he will work with our local ACT-partners in the initial important phase of the work," says Secretary-general Henrik Stubkjær.
Full extent of destruction unknown
The full extent of the destruction is yet unknown, but ACT (Action by Churches Together) predict many deaths and widespread devastation.
At the same time many roads as well as power and water supply have been destroyed.
The people of Haiti are some of the poorest in the world and as such are especially vulnerable in a disaster situation.
The local ACT partner is very experienced in the field of relief work.
DanChurchAid made 300,000 crowns of its emergency funds available to the work.
As information was received from the ACT partners in Haiti during Tuesday afternoon, the amount was raised to one million crowns.
"Initially most of the international help will likely be concentrated on areas which are easily accessible.
Focua on the poor areas in the outskirts
Our concern is therefore on the poor areas in the outskirts, where the population is weak and without resources.
We will as quickly as possible come to the aid of these people as well," says catastrophe manager Lisa Henry following a lengthy conference call with the operative partners of the churchly ACT cooperation.
