SITUATION OVERVIEW
Storm Response
On 24 September a brief, powerful storm hit Port-au-Prince, causing 6 deaths, 67 injuries and affecting thousands of families. Agencies assessed over 300 camps and identified 262 which required assistance. The overall number of families in need of shelter assistance was estimated to be nearly 20,000. A response was launched immediately, with the priority needs identified as shelter and mitigation. As a result of these efforts agencies have cumulatively reached over 112,0001 individuals.
Interim Haiti Reconstruction Commission (IHRC)
The IHRC met on 6 October via telecom and approved a further 18 projects to support reconstruction in Haiti, to a value of $777 million, including five projects proposed by the UN and partners. The IHRC confirmed full funding for the UN rubble removal project ($17 million) from the Haiti Recovery Fund but funding continues to be a challenge for most projects. Prior to the meeting, the IHRC also hosted a special meeting to discuss shelter issues.
Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP)
On 8 and 9 October the Humanitarian Coordinator hosted with support from OCHA a two day workshop to begin planning for the 2011 CAP. The CAP will form the basis for the humanitarian response in 2011, highlighting the overall context, identifying the humanitarian implications and laying out strategic priorities and objectives. The CAP will be finalized in time for the global CAP launch at the end of November. Full details of the process, timeframe and conditions are available from OCHA Haiti on interclusterhaiti@gmail.com. To facilitate this process, OCHA will also host a CAP clinic daily between 16h00 and 17h00 hours in the OCHA office on Logbase in Port au Prince.
