GOAL has completed three major distributions of food and non-food items reaching over 10,000 people in Port-au-Prince. The supplies were accessed from the World Food Programme, from the US government and also from Irish Aid.
GOAL has sent some of its medical personnel to work in the national stadium in Port-au-Prince where thousands of Haitians are seeking a safe haven.
GOAL has signed an agreement with the United Nations and the US government to act as a distributor of their relief items. As a result of this, GOAL will be providing life-saving items to thousands of desperate Haitians at various locations throughout the city.
A GOAL team will leave the city on Monday, January 24th, to inspect other affected regions and it is likely that the agency will set up additional distribution points in the countryside around the capital.
Overall, GOAL's concentration is currently focused on distribution of food and non-food items. The cargo which came in with the additional GOALies and John O'Shea from Dublin is also being distributed.
"The aid effort is unquestionably up and running and many of the bottle necks and the logistical log jams have been sorted out," said GOAL CEO, John O'Shea in Port-au-Prince.
"We owe much to Digicel for enabling us to operate at the level at which we are functioning.
"However, I have to stress that the scale is such that only a mammoth involvement and commitment from the International Community at large will result in the bulk of the vulnerable population receiving appropriate assistance," Mr. O'Shea added.
