Haiti – Floods/Cholera (ECHO Daily Flash of 22 May 2014)

Haiti's rainy season started a few weeks ago, and heavy rains have affected several areas across the country in the past days, provoking mainly small scale flooding.

Up to now, the affected population has been supported by national capacities. However, as the contingency stocks of the Haitian Civil Protection are limited, international assistance might be requested if the rains continue at the same pace. Existing contingency stocks of the international community include inter alia non-food items, food, nutrition and cholera stocks.

Unsurprisingly, an increase of cholera outbreaks has also been observed. The National Emergency Operation Center will be partially activated as of 22 May 2014 and the cyclonic season is expected to be officially launched in the beginning of June. Meanwhile, the humanitarian community has worked intensely in order to update the contingency stocks and prepare for the cyclonic season.
