Arlington, VA - January 13, 2009 - IRD, a specialist in disaster response and emergency relief operations, has immediately mobilized an emergency response team to Haiti, responding to last night's 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas. IRD will focus on the provision of emergency commodities, such as water, sanitation kits, medicines, hygiene kits, and shelter materials. IRD has provided substantial emergency support to Haiti in the past.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti during this tragic time," said Dr. Arthur Keys, President and Chief Executive Officer of IRD. "IRD stands ready and equipped to provide assistance to those affected by this devastating disaster."
Tuesday's earthquake was the worst to hit Haiti in more than 200 years. An estimated 3 million people have been affected, and the loss of life is expected to be high.
Donations are needed to support the relief efforts in Haiti, and ongoing relief and development around the world:
In advance of the 2009 hurricane season, IRD shipped more than $4 million dollars worth of oral rehydration salts and pharmaceuticals for people in Haiti.
