Haiti - Displacement surpasses one million (DG ECHO, IOM) (ECHO Daily Flash of 15 January 2025)

  • According to alarming new figures released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 1,041,000 people are now internally displaced in Haiti, many of them displaced multiple times. The figure almost doubled compared to the previous report of September 2024 and represents 9% of the total population.
  • 75% of internally displaced people (IDPs) are hosted in the provincial departments (99% in host families), while 25% are in the capital (65% in IDP sites). Children bear the greatest burden of displacement, making up over half of the displaced population.
  • The upsurge in violence during the last quarter of 2024 in the Metropolitan Zone of Port-au-Prince, the commune of Arcahaïe, and in the department of Artibonite is the main reason for this increase, underscoring the urgent needs for security and assistance.
