Haiti

Haiti – Cholera outbreak and humanitarian situation (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, Ministry of Health, UN OCHA, MSF) (ECHO Daily Flash of 10 October 2022)

  • As of 9 October, Ministry of Health reports 224 suspected cases of cholera (189 hospitalized), accounting 16 deaths. Most of them located in Port au Prince metropolitan area, but there are already suspected cases in Centre Department (Mirebalais).

  • Seven Cholera Treatment Centres (CTCs) are operational, including four managed by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The combined capacity of these centres is 204 beds. The impact of fuel shortages on access to basic services, including water and sanitation, presents a major challenge for the response to the unfolding health crisis.

  • The UN Secretary-General has urged the international community, including the members of the Security Council, to consider as of matter of urgency the request by the Haitian Government for the immediate deployment of an international specialized armed force to address the humanitarian crisis, including securing the free movement of water, fuel, food and medical supplies from main ports and airports to communities and health care facilities.
