Haiti

Haiti - Cholera cases reported in camps (DG ECHO, MSSP, PAHO, MSF, CLUSTER WASH) (ECHO Daily Flash of 24 March 2025)

  • The national health authorities registered at least 975 suspected cholera cases including 15 deaths since the beginning of 2025, in the poorest and most violence-prone areas of Port-au-Prince. Some cases are reported also in Centre and Artibonite regions.
  • Meanwhile, an upsurge in violences since mid-February in Port au Prince Metropolitan has led to the forced displacement of over 65,000 people gathering in sites where 250,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) were already seeking refuge away from criminal armed groups controlling an estimated 90% of the capital city.
  • On 20 March, the first cholera cases were reported in at least three IDPs sites in Port-au-Prince where water and sanitation conditions are disastrous.
  • As the rain season starts, increasing the risk for the disease to spread, humanitarian and medical actors call for an urgent mobilisation of resources to prevent a major outbreak.
