CONTEXT
• The Port-au-Prince Metropolitan Area (ZMPAP) remains the epicentre of violence and displacement in the country. Despite this, humanitarians remain present and continue to respond to the urgent needs faced by vulnerable children, women and men.
• More than 1.2 million children in the ZMPAP need humanitarian assistance, according to UNICEF. Across the country, more than half of the total displaced population are children. In the absence of other means of survival or protection, children are increasingly forced to join armed groups – with a notable 70 per cent increase in child recruitment over the past year. Up to 50 percent of armed group members are estimated to be children - a grave violation of children’s rights and international law.
