GOAL allocates €250,000 for Haiti response

13th January 2010

STATEMENT - 6pm

GOAL are seeking civil engineers, logisticians, and accountants, with experience of Third World conditions, for their relief and rehabilitation programmes in Haiti.

The agency, which has pledged €250,000 for immediate relief believes that alleviating the suffering of some of the thousands of people affected by the earthquake, will require a huge effort on the part of the International Community.

GOAL CEO, John O'Shea "All the indications are that this is a catastrophe of substantial proportions.

"The desperately vulnerable of Haiti - and they comprise the bulk of the country's 10 million inhabitants, will require all the basics - food, medical attention, clothing and shelter over the coming weeks and months."

GOAL's team leader on the ground, Darren Hanniffy, a civil engineer, will, over the coming days, assess how best GOAL and our partner agency, Haven, can assist some of those in most urgent need.

"These poor people were in dire need before the earthquake.

Their plight now is horrendous."

GOAL, who are appealing to the Irish public for donations, can be reached at PO BOX 19 Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin, phoning 01-2809779 or by visiting www.goal.ie
