Estonia is prepared to donate about one million kroons to help alleviate the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. The Foreign Ministry is currently assessing co-operation with other state institutions to help victims of the earthquake and alleviate the aftermath.
"Our thoughts are with all the victims of the earthquake in Haiti and their families. Estonia, like the entire international community, is with the guidance of the UN charting out what is needed and what needs to be done first to help Haiti and its people," said Foreign Minister Paet. "The situation in Haiti is very complicated at the moment, and therefore communicating to find out what is urgently needed there is difficult. However, it is important that the first urgently-needed aid arrives to the disaster area as soon as possible," he acknowledged.
A very powerful earthquake struck Haiti on the evening of Tuesday, 12 January. The earthquake, measured to be 7.0-magnitude, was followed by strong aftershocks. The epicentre of the earthquake, which caused massive destruction, was about 16 kilometers south-west of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince and was centred 10 kilometers underground.
