Cholera in the Americas - Situation summary
In 2015, a total of 36,654 cholera cases have been recorded from three countries in the Americas: Cuba (65), Haiti (36,045) and the Dominican Republic (544). Haiti alone registered 98% of the total cases in the Region of the Americas.
In Cuba, as of epidemiological week (EW) 7 of 2016, no new cholera cases have been reported.
In the Dominican Republic in 2016, as of EW 7, there were 68 suspected cholera cases reported and no deaths.
In Haiti in 2016, as of EW 7, there were 7,040 suspected cholera cases reported and 88 deaths. In addition, the number of cases registered in the first four epidemiological weeks of 2016 exceeded the number of cases registered for the same period in both 2014 and 2015, followed by a decline of cases with numbers lower than those observed in 2015 (Figure 1).
