Empowering Communities: Emergency Food Distributions for Displaced Communities in Port-au-Prince, Haiti (October 2024)

Attachments

Unprecedented gang activity in February 2024 exacerbated the existing and pervasive humanitarian crisis in Port-au-Prince, displacing hundreds of thousands and compounding already acute food insecurity. CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort), World Central Kitchen (WCK), and Acceso quickly responded to provide support to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Metropolitan Area of Port-au-Prince (MAPAP). A culturally appropriate food kit covering one month of household sustenance was designed based on Food Security and Livelihoods Cluster (FSL) recommendations to ensure that it provided an average daily intake of 2,000 kilocalories for a household of five individuals. The kit was locally sourced, with an increasing emphasis on Haitian produced goods. CORE’s field team coordinated with local camp leaders and mayors to identify IDP households and support distribution of 3,126 food kits. This learning brief further details the program design, Post-Distribution Monitoring findings, and recommendations for scaling life-saving food assistance in MAPAP.
