Earthquake Haiti: Medical assistance is still the priority

Dr. Georg Nothelle returns to Germany, the next team leaves for Haiti

Leogane/Port-au-Prince/Cologne. "The assistance provided by Malteser International, the relief service of the Order of Malta for worldwide humanitarian aid, is on the increase. Even patients from the surrounding areas are brought to our health post - by motorcycles or simply carried by family members or friends," Beate Maass, Malteser International emergency coordinator reports from Haiti.

In the health centre that Malteser International is running in Leogane three medical doctors and three nurses - all native Haitians - provide patients with medical assistance following surgery and as well as assisting those in need of general medical care.

In addition, the Malteser International medical team assisted in the delivery of two more babies. "Finally we have got drinking water", Maass rejoices. "The water supply was installed by colleagues of the organisation Arche Nova. Our cooperation with other organisations on the ground is very efficient."

On Wednesday, 27 January, Dr. Georg Nothelle, emergency relief coordinator of the first Malteser International team, will return to Germany after two weeks in the crisis region.

On the same day, the surgeon Dr. Bernd Dietz and the nurse Eva-Maria Schmidt will leave for Haiti. Dietz will take over the leadership of the medical team.

Attention editors: Dr. Georg Nothelle will be available for interviews upon his return.
