Dominica to reinforce border security with Haiti for illegal immigration

HAVANA, Oct 12, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Dominican Republic would send 600 soldiers to its border with Haiti, where security was beefed up last week with the deployment of 150 police personnel, the country's authorities said Monday.

According to information reaching here from Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic's authorities on Monday issued a statement saying the new contingent would reinforce "the staff deployed to the units located on the border (with Haiti) to face the troubles that are (a) constant threat" in the zone.

Dominican President Leonel Fernandez created the Specialized Border Security Corps (Cesfront) in 2007 to combat drug, weapon, human and commodity trafficking.

In the last weeks, local press has reported what they call "a pacific invasion" of the Dominican Republic by Haitian citizens.

Official figures indicate that more than one million undocumented Haitians live in the Dominican Republic.
