In the wake of a powerful earthquake centered just southwest of the capital city of Port-au-Prince, Church World Service staff are quickly responding, contacting long-term partners in the country and working with them to assess the situation. The Ecumenical Foundation for Peace, whose House of Hope day school is supported by CWS, reports the school is damaged and they are trying to determine the well-being of some of the staff and children. Colleagues from Christian AID, SKDE report that their office is damaged and they are also trying to reach staff who remain unaccounted for.

In addition, CWS partners in the neighboring Dominican Republic have been contacted and are accounted for. Missionaries from the Cuban Council of Churches (CCC), which serves people with disabilities in Haiti, are currently in the border city of Dajabon, working to account for a dozen volunteer partners in Port-au-Prince.

CWS is sending funds to local partners in Haiti as we continue to assess the situation. We stand ready to provide CWS Kits and CWS Blankets to people in need. Your support enables us to respond quickly in such critical situations and is greatly appreciated. Visit our website to make a donation »
