The ‘Core Group’ welcomes the vote taken by the National Assembly for a Provisional President of the Republic of Haiti and the installation of His Excellency Mr Jocelerme Privert

Port-au-Prince, February 15th, 2016: The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and members of the international community in Haiti, represented by the ‘Core Group’ (the Ambassadors of Brazil, Canada, France, Spain, the United States of America, the European Union and the Special Representative of the Organization of American States), welcomed the vote taken on February 14th by the National Assembly for a Provisional President of the Republic of Haiti and installation of His Excellency Mr Jocelerme Privert.

Following the February 7th ceremony marking the departure from power of President Michel Martelly (as required by the Haitian Constitution), this election is a fundamental step in the implementation of the Political Agreement for institutional continuity signed on February 5th between branches of the Executive and Legislative power. The ‘Core Group’ reiterates its invitation that all stakeholders will work together for the successful completion of all points of the Agreement to ensure the return to constitutional normality, the stabilizing of the Republic’s institutions, the designation of a consensus Prime Minister and the continuation of the electoral process within the timeframes indicated.

The ‘Core Group’ also reiterates its confidence in all stakeholders to continue to uphold the best interests of Haiti and its people in a spirit of dialogue and compromise while completing this Political Agreement in a peaceful climate - free from violence.
