1. The Government of Japan has decided to extend aid to the Republic of Haiti, which suffered damages from a large-scale earthquake that occurred on the morning of January 13 (JST) based on a request from the Government of Haiti. The Government of Japan has decided to extend this aid to victims of the disaster from a humanitarian viewpoint as well as in light of the friendly relationship between Japan and Haiti.
2.The aid will consist of emergency grant aid totaling a maximum of 5 million USD. The aid is scheduled to be swiftly carried out through cooperation with international organizations including the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP).
3. In addition, emergency relief goods (tents, etc.) equivalent to approximately 30 million JPY will also be provided.
4. To consider aid in the field of medical care and with the goal of carrying out surveys and coordination in Haiti, an emergency survey team is scheduled to be dispatched today. This survey team will be headed by Mr. Nobutaka Shinomiya, Japanese Ambassador to Haiti (currently residing in the Dominican Republic), and made up of members from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
