Guyana: Post-flood recovery update 14 May 2005

Georgetown , GINA, May 14, 2005 - During a television interview with Sahodra Rampersaud of the Government Information Agency, Head of the Recovery and Planning Implementation Secretariat, Robeson Benn gave an update of the operations of the Secretariat. Benn expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the process.
Issuing of households cheques

The distribution of the $ 10 000 flood relief cheques to householders is expected to be completed shortly.

To date the Secretariat has distributed 30, 000 cheques for household grants and another 33, 000 would be printed in the coming week. This caters for households in areas including Georgetown, East Bank and West Bank Demerara.

Benn said it is expected that distribution in Georgetown would be conducted within two days.

The largest number of cheques was distributed on the East Coast Demerara.

Late registration

The Secretariat has designated the period May 21 to 29 for late registration for eligible persons who have been missed by the registrars. Queries and appeals will also be addressed.

Benn said there are cases where more than one person from the same household is presenting themselves to the Secretariat with the aim of uplifting the cheques. He noted that as a result, a number of cheques have been withheld upon verification.

People are now required to make declaration that they are householders and the utility services are asked to conduct checks to ensure that this is so.

Support to Small Business and Agriculture

The next target for distribution of cheques would be farmers and small business owners. It is expected that the printing of cheques would commence within the coming week as the public verification which ensures accuracy of information provided has been completed.

In addition, the Secretariat has been engaging the Ministry of Agriculture to provide support to rice farmers. The seed paddy collection is continuing for the replanting of the upcoming season.

Educational support

Benn said there are funds available in the recovery package for the rehabilitation of schools, furniture and replacement of textbooks.
