Context

Guyana started its two-year term as an elected member of the UN Security Council and assumed its Presidency on 1 February for one month.

Guyana hosted and chaired the Caribbean Community (CARICOM)’s forty-six Heads of Government meeting. Several diplomatic officers participated in the four-day event. Discussions focused on food security, climate resilience, regional security, and sustainable energy.

Over 6,500 teachers joined a national strike that extended for a month and closed of several schools in eleven districts nationwide. The educators protested for an increase in salaries.The Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) disclosed that the union requires improved welfare packages for some 14,000 teachers.

Following the adoption of a law by the Venezuelan National Assembly declaring the Essequibo region as part of Venezuela, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs qualified it as a flagrant violation of Guyana’s sovereignty. The Government mentioned that Guyana remains committed to peace on its borders and will not allow its territorial sovereignty to be usurped.
