End of Mission Report: United Nations Disaster Assessment & Coordination (UNDAC) Floods – Guyana (June 21 – July 3, 2021)

1. Background Information on the emergency

1.1. Description of disaster

A tropical wave embedded within the ITCZ affected Guyana causing heavy rains since May into June. It affected all ten regions of Guyana, the most affected being 10, 7, 6, 5, and 2.
The President declared flooding a national disaster on June 9, with the proclamation published on June 10.
The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) leads the relief operations and continues to provide direct support in the areas of shelter management, evacuation, relief distribution across the country.
The Government requested support from CDEMA.

1.2. Impact

As of 28 June 2021, there were 51,582 affected households. 239 people were in official evacuation centres.
Regions 10, 7, 6, 5 and 2 are the most affected. The most affected sectors are agriculture and mining. This impacts in food security of vulnerable population.
In Region 7 there is the presence of mining extraction activities which are very important for national economy.
