Highlights:
· As of 7 August 2014, Guinea has recorded a total of 500 cases and 369 deaths.
· The disease has spread to several new areas including NZerekore and Yomou in the South and Siguiri, close to the border with Mali.
· UNICEF and our partners have sensitized over 3.2 million people in the affected areas in Guinea and is continuing the campaign.
· As of 28 July 2014, 82 children (0-18 years) were among the infected cases; 61 have died.
· Many children have lost one or two of their parents to the Ebola virus disease. UNICEF is continuously mapping these children and working with partners such as WFP to target them with food ratios. Psychosocial activities are being planned and will start in the coming weeks.
· UNICEF has distributed over 4 million bars of soaps, 1 million bottles of chlorine, 400 megaphones and 600 sprayers along with thousands of flyers and posters.
· Following the high level meeting of the Presidents of the Mano River Union, a new response plan has been developed by the Ministry of health and partners. The total cost of this plan is US$ 39 million.
· With support from the President’s Office, Ebola prevention messages were sent to an estimated 10 million through all cellular phone companies once a week for 2 consecutive weeks.
· UNICEF will continue to ensure the lead of the social mobilization component of the plan and remain involved in the psychosocial support, coordination, communication and logistic activities.
· Funding needs to provide effective support to government for the above activities are estimated at US$ 5 million.
· UNICEF has received a total of US$ $1,991,808 (US$ 523,602 from Japan Government, US$ 200,000 form OFDA/USAID, US$ 100,000 from Japan Natcom, $250,000 from GAC. US$ 505,436 from CERF, US$ 187,380 from UNDP and US$ 225,926 from US Fund)
· UNICEF still requires US$ 3,008,192 to fill the funding gap.
