Guinea - Assistance to Refugees: Update 13 Mar 2001

From IOM PRESS BRIEFING NOTES
by Niurka Piñeiro, IOM Spokesperson

Last night the IOM-chartered ship, the MV Fanta, left Conakry with 499 refugees on board. Since IOM's sea operations began in early January, IOM has assisted over 14,600 Sierra Leonean refugees to return home.

IOM has withdrawn its 15 vehicles from Kissidougou after three weeks of emergency operations in southeastern Guinea. Working with UNHCR, IOM trucks transported over 1,500 refugees as well as their belongings from the Katkama transit camp to the three Kountaya camps in Albadaria. In addition, 946.9 metric tons of food and non-food items were transported from the Guekedou warehouse to a safe warehouse in Kissidougou. The non-food items included timber, used for the construction of tents, and office equipment.
