Disease Outbreak Reported: Yellow fever in Guinea 03 Feb 2003

As of January 23, 2003, the Ministry of Public Health of Guinea has reported 43 cases and 24 deaths in Macenta and Kérouane prefectures. Laboratory confirmation was carried out by the Instituts Pasteur in Dakar, Senegal and Lyon, France.
A mass vaccination campaign has begun in Macenta and nearby prefectures, targetting a population of around 600 000 people. WHO and partners including Médecins sans Frontières Belgium, France and Switzerland are assisting the Ministry of Public Health with operational costs, technical assistance, vaccine and vaccine supplies for the campaign.
