Strong tremor in Guatemala: Situation Report No. 1

Current Situation

This morning, around 5:23 a.m., a strong tremor of 6.6 on Richter scale was reported, with the epicentre located in the board coast of Chiapas, Mexico, in the border with Guatemala, according with the Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology – INSIVUMEH.

National Coordinator for Disasters Reduction CONRED issued an Institutional Orange Alert from the magnitude of the event, sensible in most of the country. They are issuing a serial of alerts and dismissed a tsunami alert.

According with the authorities, the most affected departments (states) are San Marcos and Quetzaltenango, mostly in infrastructure: 42 houses, religious temples and public buildings. Also, we have information about an electricity blackout in several areas of the West of the country.

There is a report of two deaths: a newborn in the National Hospital of San Marcos, after a piece of ceiling drops on him, and a woman in Quetzaltenango, from a heart attack.

There is information about landslides blocking several roads: Km. 180 in the road from Quetzaltenango to Coatepeque (South of the area; also the road to Cobán, Alta Verapaz (North of the country) is blocked on Km. 94. There is another blocked road in Km. 278, in the Inter American way, and on Km. 267, from San Marcos to the border with Mexico.

Ministry of Education suspended classes on Huehuetenango, Quetzaltenango, Sololá, San Marcos, Totonicapán and Retalhuleu, preventing any major damage to the students’ body in case of a major.

World Vision Guatemala Actions

National Office activated the Rapid Response Team as prevention and it’s making a monitoring work in the coverage area of all 32 Area Development Programs – ADP – from the magnitude of the event.

Up to now, the ADP in Huehuetenango, San Marcos and Quetzaltenango have no report of major damages. San Marcos reports landslides in main and secondary roads.

All the staff teams are working to verify the situation of families and specially the sponsored children, without any negative report at this time.
