GUATEMALA - VOLCANIC ERUPTION
INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
22 JANUARY 1987

1. FOLLOWING INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM UNDRO/UNDP RESREP AND INSTITUTE OF SEISMOLOGY, VOLCANOLOGY AND METEOROLOGY, GUATEMALA
CITY:

2. ON 21 JAN 87 ABOUT 4 PM LT ERUPTION OF VOLCANO PACAYA SITUATED 25 KMS SOUTH OF GUATEMALA CITY.

3. ASH AND ROCK AFFECTED AREA OF APPROX 50 SQ.KMS. ACTIVITIES CONTINUING TODAY BUT LESS VIOLENTLY. 4. ABOUT 10 PERSONS INJURED AND FIRE CAUSING DAMAGE TO VEGETATION.

5. SO FAR NO APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

1. INSTITUTE OF SEISMOLOGY, VOLCANOLOGY AND METEOROLOGY, GUATEMALA CITY REPORTS:

2. ON 25 JAN 87 AT 1745 HR LT SECOND ERUPTION OF VOLCANO PACAYA. VERTICAL ERUPTION COLUMN TO 8,000 METRES AND LAVA FLOW UP TO 4 KMS AWAY FROM CRATER. WIND BLOWING ASH COLUMN TOWARDS SOUTH. MAGNITUDE THIS ERUPTION IS 1/4 OF 1973 ERUPTION MAGNITUDE OF SAME VOLCANO.

3. EXCEPT FOR FALL ROCKS PERFORATING SOME HOUSE ROOFS, NO DAMAGE. WOMEN AND CHILDREN (300 PERSONS) IN SIX NEAREST VILLAGES EVACUATED BY LOCAL EMERGENCY COMMITTEE TO CITY AMATITLAN.

12 FEBRUARY 1987 -

1. SMALL EXPLOSIONS STILL OCCURRING IN PACAYA CRATER, BUT STRONG EXPLOSIONS OF 21 AND 25 JANUARY HAVE NOT RECURRED.

2. NATIONAL EMERGENCY COMMITTEE AUTHORIZED RETURN OF 920 EVACUEES ON 4 FEBRUARY.

3. ONE WEEK'S FOOD SUPPLIES AND ROOFING SHEETS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO POPULATION AFFECTED.

4. THIS IS LAST UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT RE THIS ERUPTION UNLESS A NEW EMERGENCY DEVELOPS.
