The humanitarian impact of the Fuego volcano eruption, which is located on the borders of the Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez departments in southern Guatemala, has increased. The eruption on 6 June was characterized by strong pyroclastic flows and ashfalls that reached a distance of 7 km, causing displacement in the area.
According to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) and media, as of 8 June, 818 people have been displaced from the affected municipalities: Siquinalá, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Escuintla, in the Escuintla department, and Acatenango and San Pedro Yepocapa, in the Chimaltenango department. At least four evacuation centres have been set up in the Escuintla department. In addition, recent rains have triggered lahars on the volcano slopes, resulting in the closure of one major road and affecting two others.
National authorities are monitoring the situation.
