Since 4 June, the Fuego volcano, located on the borders of the Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez departments in southern Guatemala, increased its activity. This has been characterised by explosions producing ash plumes reaching nearly 5 km above sea level and lava flows extending up to 600 metres. Additionally, pyroclastic flows have reached distances of up to 7 km along the Las Lajas, Ceniza, and Seca ravines.
According to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), ash has moved in the northwest, west, and southwest directions, and the ash-fall affected communities in the municipalities of Siquinalá, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, and Escuintla in Escuintla Department, as well as Acatenango and San Pedro Yepocapa in Chimaltenango Department. Moreover, authorities have conducted the preventive evacuation of residents from nearby communities, who are being relocated to the shelter set up at the Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa Sports Center.
CONRED continues to closely monitor the situation and has advised residents near the volcano to follow official guidance in the event of increased volcanic activity.
