Guatemala - Severe weather (CONRED, WHO PAHO, UN OCHA, Reliefweb, INSIVUMEH, GDACS) (ECHO Daily Flash of 21 June 2022)

  • Heavy rainfall and strong winds have been affecting most of the country since the beginning of the rainy season (mid-April) causing floods, landslides and a number of severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.

  • The National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) and WHO PAHO report, as of 20 June, 21 fatalities, over 3,500 evacuated people (of which more than 300 in shelters) and a total of more than 668,200 affected people across the country. Around 7,000 people have received assistance by CONRED. In addition, CONRED reports 1,359 damaged houses, 121 damaged schools and nine destroyed bridges.

  • Considering only the last period (18-19 June), several incidents occurred across south-eastern Departments, caused by the heavy rainfall due to the passage near the Pacific coast of the tropical depression CELIA. Around 28,100 people resulted affected and three people are still missing.

  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over the whole country. Locally very heavy rainfall is forecast over central Departments.
