Guatemala – Landslide Update (ECHO, CONRED, EU Delegation, Media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 4 October 2015)

  • On Saturday 3 October the figure of number of dead reached 62 while some 350-400 people remained unaccounted for. About 125 houses were washed away and remain buried under around 20 metres of sand and stone. No survivors have been rescued so far, and the likelihood of finding any survivor is minimal. Over 100 people are sheltered in a municipal building.

  • CONRED (National Disaster Management Authority) and the diplomatic missions confirmed that, for the time being, no international assistance is being requested. Guatemala is confident that its local capacities suffice to meet most immediate needs (search and rescue teams, food, wash, shelter, NFRI, etc.).
