Guatemala - Earthquakes (GDACS, USGS, Copernicus EMSR, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 9 July 2025)

  • An earthquake of 5.7 M at a depth of 10 km occurred in southern Guatemala on 8 July at 21.41 UTC (15.41 local time). The epicentre was located inland in the Escuintla department, approximately 3 km north-west of San Vicente Pacaya village and 17 km north-east of the city of Escuintla. The earthquake was followed by four aftershocks up to 4.8 M across the affected area.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 974,000 people were exposed to strong shaking and 2.65 million to moderate shaking.
  • Media report, as of 9 July, two fatalities due to a landslide triggered by the main earthquake that occurred in the area of Antigua Guatemala city. In addition, media also report several preventively evacuated people, an unconfirmed number of injured people, and a number of damaged buildings.
  • On 9 July, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) was activated in rapid mapping mode (EMSR 814).
