The institutional orange alert has been declared in response to the increase in the effusive activity of the Fuego volcano, which has generated the descent of pyroclastic flows through the ravines of the volcanic complex, according to information issued by INSIVUMEH. In response to this situation, preventive and operational measures are being implemented in accordance with the National Response Plan -PNR- and the Institutional Response Plan -PIR-.
Local authorities and members of the institutions that make up the CONRED System have held an inter-institutional meeting to activate the Municipal Emergency Operations Center in San Juan Alotenango, with the aim of coordinating response actions at the local level.
Operational personnel continue to monitor and respond in the area, supporting the evacuation of the communities of Las Lajitas and El Porvenir, who are being transferred to the center set up in the municipality of San Juan Alotenango. In addition, self-evacuation is being promoted among residents near the volcano.
Likewise, humanitarian aid has been mobilized from the SE-CONRED central warehouses for the evacuated people. For its part, the Ministry of Education has decided to suspend classes on Monday, March 10 as a security measure for students and educational staff in the municipalities of Alotenango, Sacatepéquez; Escuintla and Siquinalá in the department of Escuintla; and in San Pedro Yepocapa, Chimaltenango.
SE-CONRED recommends that the population stay informed through the official CONRED and INSIVUMEH accounts, avoid going near ravines and areas near the volcano, review their family response plan and make sure they have their 72-hour backpack ready. In the event of falling ash, it is suggested to wear a mask, cover water tanks and report any emergency to 119.
