Central America - Severe weather, update (UN OCHA, NOAA-CPC) (ECHO Daily Flash of 01 July 2024)

  • Since mid-June, several countries of Central America, particularly El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, have experienced heavy rainfall, due also to the influence of tropical storm ALBERTO, which caused floods and resulted in an increasing number of casualties and damage.
  • According to UN OCHA, in Guatemala, ten people died, 14,400 were affected and almost 6,200 houses were damaged. In El Salvador 19 people died, almost 500 houses have been damaged and flooded and 19 communities were without electricity. Furthermore, in Honduras, almost 1,500 people have been displaced.
  • On 1-2 June, moderate to localized heavy rainfall is forecast across most of Guatemala, El Salvador and western Honduras.
