Attachments

Highlights:

Between July and September 2023, an estimated 144,343 refugees and migrants arrived in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, mainly from Afghanistan, Syria, North Africa, and South Asia. This represented an increase in arrivals of 21 per cent compared to the same period in 2022.

In the five countries, UNICEF reached 41,766 children (3,335 unaccompanied and separated) with child protection services and enabled 3,147 frontline workers to improve their knowledge and skills on child protection. Around 24,745 children gained access to education, while 2,211 schoolteachers were trained on inclusion of refugee and migrant children. 1,713 children benefited from general health checks and referrals and 406,689 people were reached through messaging on access to services.

As of 30 September 2023, UNICEF had received close to US$ 4 million against its USD 37 million appeal. With US$ 20.5 million of carry-forward funding, the appeal is 70 per cent funded. This however does not cover all countries and sectors equally, with significant gaps in Serbia and Italy.
