Greece - Wildfires (Copernicus EMSR, JRC EFFIS, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 23 June 2025)

  • A number of wildfires have been burning across the Chios island, eastern Greece since the morning of 22 June (UTC), causing population evacuations and widespread damage.
  • According to the JRC European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the wildfires have burnt so far an area of more than 400 ha in the eastern part of the island and are currently not contained. Media report, as of 23 June, evacuation orders and ongoing population evacuation for 16 villages, where the worst affected are Agios Markos Vrontados, Agios Panteleimon, Kastromina, Paryfes, Gialourika, Panagia, and Voitheia.
  • In addition, another wildfire has been affecting the Evia island, central Greece since 22 June, prompting the evacuation of a hotel across the affected area.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated in rapid mapping mode (EMSR806) on 22 June for the Chios island, and one map was produced so far.
  • Over the next 72 hours, according to the JRC EFFIS), the fire danger forecast is expected from high to very extreme across most of eastern and central Greece.
