Since 26 June at 11:30 UTC, a wildfire has been burning in Thymari town, part of the Palea Fokea municipal unit, located in the south-eastern part of Attica region, south-eastern Greece, causing population evacuations and widespread damage. According to the JRC European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the wildfires have burnt an area of 237 ha.
As of 26 June, the Greek Civil Protection reported that at least 40 people have been evacuated, the evacuation orders have been issued for the villages of Thymari, Tourkolimano, Katafygi Harakas and Triantafyllia, one main road has been also closed. According to media, at least 20 houses have been destroyed, and several others have been damaged.
National authorities deployed 130 firefighters, 41 vehicles, 12 aircraft and 12 helicopters to contain the wildfire.
The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated in rapid mapping mode (EMSR807) on 26 June to provide the fire extent and monitor potential damage.
Over the next 72 hours, according to the JRC EFFIS), the fire danger forecast is expected to be from extreme to very extreme in the affected area.
