Overview
In 2023, a total of 4,749 refugees and asylum-seekers arrived in Greece by sea. The majority are from the State of Palestine (23%), Afgnanistan (11%), Somalia (10%), Eritrea (9%), and the Dem. Rep. of the Congo (9%). Women account for 22%, children for 21% and men for 57%.
In May, there was a slight increase in arrivals on the islands with 844 people arriving, in contrast to April when 804 individuals had arrived. The number of arrivals between January and May 2023 has increased by 145% compared to the same period in 2022.
During 2023, the majority of new arrivals were received by Lesvos, accounting for 51% of the total, followed by the Dodecanese Islands at 23%, Samos at 14%, Chios at 8%, and other Islands at 3%.
