Operational Updates

Food assistance to asylum seekers and host communities: WFP provided unconditional cash assistance to 2,675 asylum seekers at the Tarikom settlement and 4,005 individuals from host communities in the Upper East region of Ghana to meet immediate food and nutrition needs. The beneficiaries included pregnant and breastfeeding women (PBW), adolescent girls, and children aged 6 to 23 months. This initiative was carried out in partnership with Mobile Money Limited (for host communities) and Absa bank (cash in an envelope for Asylum Seekers).

Dry spell response: WFP and UN partner agencies (FAO, UNICEF, UNFPA), have mobilised or repurposed USD 16.6 million has been mobilized or diverted from existing funding to support the integrated response to the ongoing dry spell. Affected people are receiving much needed support, including cash-based transfers, agricultural inputs and equipment, livestock, dignity kits, and psychosocial support. WFP has received funding from USAID-BHA to support agro-pastoralist communities affected by the dry spell. The targeting exercise in ongoing and implementation will start once this is completed.

Gulf of Guinea Response: On September 26, 2024, a Joint UN response program focusing on food security, nutrition, livelihoods, and resilience for asylum seekers and host communities was launched. The program, funded by the French government and expected to run from August 2024 to January 2026, aims to assist 10,200 vulnerable individuals—8,200 from host communities and 2,000 asylum seekers—in the Upper East and Upper West Regions. The Adventist Relief Services (ADRA) has been selected as a cooperating partner, and the signing of the Field Level Agreement is underway to implement nutrition-sensitive and gender-transformative livelihood activities.
