Operational Updates
To support and facilitate the implementation of the Master Card Foundation Agribusiness for Youth Employment (MCF AgYE) Program, WFP established the Agrochampions Post Harvest Roundtable (APHRO) Working Group. WFP launched the Post Harvest Mechanization Training Program, which is currently training 400 young agricultural engineers and aims to create 600 additional jobs by December 2024. Additionally, WFP distributed a total of 75 corn mills to selected “agrochampions”, including 60 to three women-owned small and medium-scale processing companies and 4 to colleges hosting the Post Harvest Mechanization Training School. This initiative is expected to generate over 500 jobs for women in the regions of Upper West (Lawra), Upper East (Funbisi and Tumu), Bono (Wenchi), and Volta (Ohawu).
Food assistance to asylum seekers and host communities: WFP provided unconditional cash assistance to 2,240 asylum seekers at the Tarikom settlement and 3,990 individuals from host communities in the Upper East region of Ghana to meet immediate food and nutrition needs. The beneficiaries included pregnant and breastfeeding women (PBW), adolescent girls, and children aged 6 to 23 months. This initiative was carried out in partnership with Mobile Money Limited and Absa bank. As part of the support to the asylum seekers and host communities, WFP launched a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking cooperating partners (CPs) to implement nutrition-sensitive and gender-transformative resilience (livelihoods) activities.
Joint UN Programme on Food and Nutrition Security: WFP is undertaking preparations for a Joint UN programme on food and nutrition security, in collaboration with UNICEF and IOM, funded by the French government. The 18-month programme, which will run from August 2024 to January 2026, aims to enhance food security and implement resilience and livelihoods activities. The official launch of the programme is scheduled for 26 September in the Upper East regional capital.
