AMA To Curb Future Flooding In Accra

The Mayor of Accra, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, has called on President Evans Atta Mills at the Castle Osu in Accra.

President Mills commended the Mayor, the Ghana National Fire Service and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other organisations for their swift response to bring yesterday’s flood situation to normal. The President observed that the floods came partly as a result of people building blatantly on water ways.

He encouraged all to get involved by taking measures to avoid such situations. “Going round yesterday, we saw quite a number of unseen circumstances and we must all help prevent disasters, if not totally, it must be reduced”, the President said.

He assured the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) of government support to source funds to construct more storm drains.

The AMA Chief Executive on his part said storm drains have been constructed in Dansoman and its surrounding areas and will continue to collaborate with its stakeholders to construct more in the metropolis.

The Mayor acknowledged the fast growing nature of the metropolis and pleaded with property owners to pay their property taxes to enable the AMA get more funds to undertake their projects.
