GEORGIA: PROVIDING PEDIATRIC HEALTH SERVICES
In the Republic of Georgia, acute respiratory infections are common among children from infancy to 14 years of age. Current methods of treatment used in hospitals are either outdated or inefficient.
UMCOR, with funding support from UNICEF, is addressing the health needs of vulnerable groups in Georgia through the Support for Child Health in Georgia Project. By providing training to healthcare providers in Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI), and by supplying much-needed medicines, children living in shelters for displaced people in the conflict-affected region of Shida Kartli will get the quality health services they need.
Tkviavi Emergency Medical Service (MDS), one of five hospitals receiving IMCI training from UMCOR, serves 6,104 children under the age of 14 with respiratory infections. Tkviavi MDS has received nebulizers, pulse oximeters, and essential medicines necessary for the treatment of common childhood illnesses. The project has significantly improved the quality of the hospital's pediatric healthcare services.
