Georgia - Severe weather: (IFRC, Copernicus EMSR, media, NOAA-CPC) (ECHO Daily Flash of 28 February 2025)

  • Heavy snowfall has been affecting western Georgia since 20 February, in particular the region of Guria, resulting in casualties, several disruptions, and damage.
  • As of 25 February, the IFRC reported three fatalities and 1,400 people affected by heavy snowfall. In addition, at least 28,870 people have been affected by power outages in 39 villages in Chokhatauri and Ozurgeti municipalities. Several houses have been damaged due to the roof collapsing, schools have been suspended and 42 roads have been closed.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR791) was activated on 27 February to provide damage assessment emergency mapping.
  • Over the next 24 hours, no more snow is forecast over the affected areas.
