UNHCR, the government and civil society work together to ensure access to rights and services for refugees. UNHCR also supports protection and self-reliance for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Abkhazia.

HIGHLIGHTS

In December 2023, the European Council granted candidate status to Georgia. This decision is expected to have a positive impact on legal and social frameworks, including asylum, as efforts are made to align policies more closely with European Union standards.

The government of Georgia, adding to 9 pledges made in 2019 and 2020, made 6 further pledges during the GRF 2023 as well as in 2024. The pledges include a commitment to introduce legislative amendments paving the way for eligible refugees and humanitarian status holders to obtain disability status and the financial assistance linked to it.

UNHCR assisted 1,500 vulnerable IDPs in eastern Abkhazia through legal and social counselling. Over 780 individuals received cash or food assistance in the last six months.

Over 700 vulnerable people in Tbilisi-administered territory were provided with cash assistance by UNHCR to meet their basic needs in the last six months.
