Council of Europe to observe presidential elections in Georgia

STRASBOURG, 31.03.2000 - A delegation of the COUNCIL OF EUROPE Parliamentary Assembly will visit Georgia from 7 to 11 April to observe the presidential elections on 9 April.
During the visit, the delegation members will meet the presidential candidates, including the incumbent President Eduard SHEVARDNADZE, as well as Parliament Chairman Zurab ZHVANIA, Supreme Court Chairman Lado CHANTURIA, Foreign Minister Irakli MENAGARISHVILI and Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission Jumber LOMINADZE. They will also have meetings with the OSCE Mission in Georgia, the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission and ambassadors of Council of Europe member States. Meetings with NGO and media representatives are also scheduled.

On Sunday 9 April, the delegation will visit polling stations in Tbilisi and around the rest of the country, including Ajara.

A press conference is scheduled for Monday 10 April at 13h00 in the Parliament Building.
