INTRODUCTION

In early June 2022, the Department of Water Resources shared the rainy season JAS report. The report indicated that the Gambia would receive above normal rainfall.

This indicates that there will be more rainfall, which could result to flash flood, destruction of infrastructure, causing displacement, Food Insecurity, disease amongst others. As has been predicted by the forecast parts of the country particularly the Western part was hit by excessive rainfall. Resulting to flash flooding across major towns and villages. However, prior to and in readiness of the forecast. The National Disaster, management Agency had taken on board certain steps in preparation of the ensuing event.

ACTIONS TAKEN

⦁ NDMA summoned a meeting to formerly discussed with partner institutions the JAS revelation in mid-June 2022 ⦁ Conducted series of sensitization in various medium and in various languages domesticating the JAS ⦁ Review and update the assessment tool, used to collect data ⦁ Prepared Contingency plans in 18 Districts.

CURRENT SITUATION

WCR - Reported 1500 hhs affected with over 13500 people RAPID ASSESSMENT FINDINGS

The following key findings were observed during the period.

❖ An estimated 1500 families affected with a total population of about 13500 persons within the region ❖ At least 600 families displaced, (Squatting with neighbors, schools and or relocate to other settlements) ❖ Youna-Mariama Kunda bridge damaged ❖ Open wells within the affected areas completely collapsed, and or grossly polluted. ❖ Latrines submerged, and others collapsed ❖ The survivors lost valuable belongings, food stuff eroded, and household furniture and equipment all perished ❖ School children lost their stationeries ❖ Families went without food the whole day as there is none in place and where there is any, space for cooking was not available ❖ Blockage of water ways found in almost all the major areas visited ❖ A 3-year-old sustained injury due to collapsed structure
