Strong winds and heavy rainfall have been affecting southern France (in particular the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and the neighbouring Occitanie region) since 11 February, causing floods and a number of severe weather-related incidents (mainly due to the strong wind) that have resulted in more casualties and damage.
As of 13 February, the French Civil Protection reports two confirmed fatalities in Landes department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region) and Tarn-et-Garonne department (Occitanie region). In addition, the French Civil Protection reports 26 injured people across the Nouvelle-Aquitaine and the Occitanie regions, where the most affected departments are Landes, Gironde, Charente, Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales. Moreover, media also reports 66 evacuated people across the Charente department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region), several closed schools across the Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales departments (Occitanie region) and up to 900 000 power outages throughout both the aforementioned affected regions.
The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR866) was activated in rapid mapping mode on 11 February, and 16 maps have been produced so far.
Over the next 48 hours, more rainfall is still forecast over southern France, with locally heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
